Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.

[HE] LOVED YOUR CARD SO MUCH HE ATE IT! I love this because it’s a perfect example of a child’s logic. Like, this kid was so excited about this card that it made perfect sense to eat it, just so he could have it inside him. Putting in on the fridge just wouldn’t do it justice. It’s adorable and hilarious.

Day 05 – A song that reminds you of someone

My grandmother’s favorite actor, Pedro Infante, singing “Amorcito Corazon,” during an old, Mexican black-and-white film. As you can probably conclude from the clip, he’s singing a love song.  This song conjures up memories of my grandmother singing it in our little house in Chihuahua, whenever she was happy and the sun was shining. (It feels like it should have been a Sunday.)  I remember trying to chime in with the whistling, but I didn’t know how at four or five, so my mom would do it for me.  It’s such a simple childhood memory, yet it overwhelms me with nostalgia and even a hint of sadness.
