Covet A Brainy Tune

Something unheard of happened at work today.
It’s back-to-school season, and checkout lines at Staples can get ridiculous. Everyone just wants to get in and get out as quickly (and cheaply) as possible. However, amidst the madness, mistakes happen. Sometimes I forget to scan an item. Oftentimes, the customer scurries off with a sneaky grin on his or her face. “HAHAHA! I just got this glue stick for FREE! Quick, let’s leave, kids, before the cashier realizes and I have to spend another 50 cents!” Of course they don’t care about how each missing item hurts our business. I know first-hand that these are hard economic times.
This is why it was so surprising when a mother returned to the store after loading all of her supplies (all $200-worth) into her car, just so that I could scan the $3.99 case of water I had missed underneath her cart. I thanked her for doing so. “Not everyone does what you just did,” I told her.
“Really?” She replied. “If you don’t have your integrity, what do you have?”
Words to live by. I have a feeling that, with a mother like her, her son’s going to grow up to be a great man someday.
